pumpkin crisp

Pumpkin Crisp fresh out of the oven this morning.

To celebrate Halloween at work today we are having a potluck lunch. My contribution to the meal is pumpkin crisp. I got up an hour early this morning to create the crisp so it will be nice and warm at lunchtime [I have an insulated carrier to put it in]. So right now the house smells really good. I thought I would share the recipe with you.

1 large can pumpkin
1 large can evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 cup chopped nuts [optional--I don't use nuts. Some people are allergic]
2 sticks melted margarine
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 box yellow cake mix

Mix pumpkin, milk, sugar, eggs and cinnamon and pour into 9 x 13 pan.

Sprinkle dry cake mix over mixture and then place nuts on top of cake mix.

Pour melted margarine over top of this and bake for 50 minutes at 350 degrees.

Can top with cool whip, 1/2 cup powdered sugar or 8 oz. pack of cream cheese [I normally use powdered sugar].

Can be eaten with or withour extra topping and is just as good.

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again
And I think its a sin, yes

Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

In Birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Here I come Alabama

Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet Home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

Sweet home Alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the governor's true
Sweet Home Alabama
Lordy
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Yea, yea Montgomery's got the answer

halloween sky show

Venus and the crescent Moon photographed in July 2007 by Dan Bush of Albany, Missouri. The scene will be much the same on Halloween 2008. Photo and story courtesy of NASA.

Stop! Take your finger off that doorbell. Something spooky is happening behind your back. Turn around, tip back your mask, and behold the sunset.

It's a Halloween sky show.

On October 31, the crescent Moon will sneak up on Venus for a close encounter of startling beauty. The gathering is best seen just after sunset when the twilight is pumpkin-orange and Halloween doorbells are chiming in earnest. Venus hovers just above the southwestern horizon, the brightest light in the sky, while the exquisitely slender Moon approaches just a few degrees below: sky map.

Okay, stop staring. There's candy to be gathered.

One night later, you can give the sequel your undivided attention. On November 1, Venus and the Moon emerge from the twilight side-by-side, Venus on the right, the Moon on the left. Look carefully at the Moon. Can you see a ghostly image of the full Moon inside the bright horns of the crescent? That’s called "Earthshine" or sometimes "the da Vinci glow" because Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to explain it: Sunlight hits Earth and ricochets to the Moon, casting a sheen of light across the dark lunar terrain. A crescent Moon with Earthshine is one of the prettiest sights in the heavens.

The show continues on November 2 with Venus, the still-slender crescent Moon, and Jupiter arrayed in a broad line across the southwestern sky. This linear arrangement attracts attention almost as much as the luminosity of its points: Venus, the Moon and Jupiter are the brightest objects in the heavens, visible from light-polluted cities even before the twilight sky fades to black.

Trace your finger upward along the line—that is where the Moon is going. Nightfall on November 3 reveals the Moon transported to Jupiter. The two form a pair so tight and eye-catching, it may take your breath away.

As hard as it may be to believe, these nights of dark beauty are just a hint of things to come. The real show begins one month after Halloween when Venus, the Moon, and Jupiter converge on a tiny patch of sky no bigger than the end of your thumb held at arm's length. December 1 is the best night to look, even better than Halloween.

Now that's scary.

And now, a song from my favorite Deep Purple album . . . ever . . . and that's saying a lot considering how great Machine Head was.

Comin out of nowhere
Drivin like rain
Stormbringer dance
On the thunder again
Dark cloud gathering
Breaking the day
No point running

Ride the rainbow
Crack the sky
Stormbringer coming
Time to die
Got to keep running
Stormbringer coming
Hes got nothing you need
Hes gonna make you bleed

Rainbow shaker
On a stallion twister
Bareback rider
On the eye of the sky
Stormbringer coming down
Meaning to stay
Thunder and lightning
Heading your way

Ride the rainbow
Crack the sky
Stormbringer coming
Time to die
Got to keep running
Stormbringer coming
Hes got nothing you need
Hes gonna make you bleed

Coming out of nowhere
Drivin like a-rain
Stormbringer dance

binocular

I've been working on a web project at work these days. Creating headers for our new international website. One of the categories is research and in sorting through photos to be used I came up short so I decided to pull out my binocular microscope when I got home and take a few pictures of it. I only took about 25 shots. That's not many for me. This one was the winner. So my binocular microscope is destined to be an international celebrity with all the rights and honors that go with it.

This feels like Friday to me. Such an incredibly long week. Lots going on in our family. [T]ae kwon mom has finished water aerobic instructor training and has benn working on a major art project with her homeschooled art class. [B]iomedical daughter has been spending a lot of low-sleep nights lately working on a major presentation about herniated discs and a biomedical solution. Her presentation was today. She said it went very well. And [F]ine art daughter has been getting ready for a major adventure in her life. I'll tell you more about it Sunday.

I dont have to run around,
I dont have to stay out all night.
cause I got me a sweet ... a sweet, lovin woman,
And she knows just how to treat me right.

Well my baby, shes alright,
Well my baby, shes clean out-of-sight.
Dont you know that shes ... shes some kind of wonderful.
Shes some kind of wonderful ... yes she is, shes,
Shes some kind of wonderful, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahhh ...

When I hold her in my arms,
You know she sets my soul on fire.
Oooh, when my baby kisses me,
My heart becomes filled with desire.
When she wraps her lovin arms around me,
About drives me out of my mind.
Yeah, when my baby kisses me,
Chills run up and down my spine.

My baby, shes alright,
My baby, shes clean out-of-sight.
Dont you know that she is ... shes some kind of wonderful.
Shes some kind of wonderful ... yes she is,
Shes some kind of wonderful, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahhh ...

Now is there anybody, got a sweet little woman like mine?
There got to be somebody, got a, got a sweet little woman like mine? yeah!
Can I get a witness?
Can I get a witness?
Can I get a witness? yeah ...
Can I get a witness? ohhh ...
Can I get a witness? yeah ...
Can I get a witness? yes.

Im talkin, talkin bout my baby. yeah.

what's in your trunk

So, [B]iomedical daughter called me last night and said "Dad, my back tire is falling apart." Only one thing to do! Mid-morning today she took her car to the tire store a couple of blocks from campus and I met her there. We got two new tires ordered and left. [B]iomedical daughter introduced me to one of her favorite lunch places, the Chinese Sub Shop. And she was right on target. My sandwich was great! I dropped her off on campus and returned to work. Later this afternoon the tire place called and I left to pick [b]iomedical daughter up and get her car. I called her when I was within a couple of minutes of campus and she let me know that it would be a few minutes before she was finished in the lab. I parked in the pullout between the engineering lab and the the music building to wait and I was provided with the greatest few minutes of entertainment . . . better than a movie.

This little green Chevy was parked right in front of me and in the car were two teenage girls, waiting impatiently for someone. In just a minute a lady, who appeared to be the girls' mother came sauntering up with a backpack on her back and a guitar in case over her shoulder. The driver teenager opened the door and moved toward the passenger door. The mom tossed her backpack and guitar case into the back seat and when she started baby talking toward the back seat I realized there was also a baby in there somewhere. The driver-turned-passenger tried to get into the back seat without success so the mom got back out of the car and pulled a HUGE white loaded duffle bag from the back seat and lugged it around to the trunk. When she popped the trunk lid, the trunk was full almost to overflowing with clothes, books, bags, papers, even a crushed box of corn flakes. She tossed the duffle into the trunk and forced the lid closed. After attempting once more to get into the back seat, the teenager again backed away and the mom pulled a HUGE black duffle bag from the back seat and drug it around to the trunk, popped the trunk lid and struggled to stuff the bag into the trunk. After several attempts she finally forced the trunk lid closed. Teenager slide into the back seat and closed the door. At this point I could now see the driver's open door and inside the pocket of her door were papers, dozens of papers, packed tightly, hanging out, overflowing. She closed her door and they drove away.

[B]iomedical daughter arrived at that moment and as we drove away I told her about the green Chevy. At the next traffic light we pulled right up beside the Chevy. It looked so normal. Just three ladies in a little car. We couldn't see the baby in the back seat. We couldn't see the backpack or the guitar case. But we knew they were in there somewhere.

sidewalk chalk

On Sunday my wife and I walked from our home to the Mulberry Festival being held at the town square. There were only about 40 artists' booths at this festival, so it was a nice departure from the huge festivals and fairs that usually dominate this time of year. One of our favorite artists was Barbara Turner Tigrett who paints nature studies and pet portraits and does 3-D collages. Her work is just fantastic.

As the festival came to a close we stopped by the sidewalk chalk area where kids had been busy creating chalk works of art on the rough pavement. After the kids left only their masterpieces and huge chucks of broken and used chalk remained. The scene brought to mind an old television cartoon on Nickelodeon called Chalk Zone. Have you ever seen it? Our girls were perhaps 10 and 13 last time I saw it, but it was always really interesting. This elementary school kid named Rudy Tabootie and his friends Snap and Penny used magical chalk to explore inside an alternate world, created as chalk drawings. It was really cool. I don't think it's on anymore, but we all enjoyed it back then.

Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?

Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

a little bit more lbl

On the way home from the fluorescent mineral dig in Marion, Kentucky I stopped by Land Between the Lakes [LBL] for a bit more hiking before returning home Saturday night. Just inside LBL I stopped at Canal Park for a short hike and a few pictures. The berries above were shot at that park.

To end the day of hiking I took the Hematite Lake Trail in the Honker Lake Wildlife Refuge Area. The bottom picture was taken near the end of that hike. What a nice day to be hiking and for some [like these guys] a bit of fishing.

the fluorescent mineral dig

The fluorescent mineral dig in Marion, Kentucky was scheduled to begin at 8:50 Saturday morning. I called to let them know I was on my way from land Between the Lakes. At 8:47 I pulled into the parking lot of the Clement Mineral Museum in Marion and our Saturday adventure began shortly thereafter. We traveled by caravan to an area which used to be an active fluorite mine and for hours we collected minerals by the bucketload. I brought home fluorite, barite, calcite, galena and sphalerite. What an incredible day of collecting. The only thing that would have made this day any more enjoyable would have been if [t]ae kwon mom and our daughters could have been here too. They were all busy with water aerobics instructor training for my wife and college for both daughters. Well, I think I collected enough minerals for all of us.

I took the picture above on the way out of the mine area. It looked like such a nice, typical country road. Not unlike the roads I walked when I was a boy.

a weekend away

[T]ae kwon mom, [b]iomedical daughter and [f]ine arts daughter were all busy this weekend, so I ventured out on my own for a couple of days. Our geology club had scheduled a fluorite dig in Marion, Kentucky on Saturday so I decided to take an extra day and do some exploring in the Land Between the Lakes area. I had a fantastic time on Friday hiking the trails of this National Recreation Area, taking pictures and enjoying the ambiance. The weather was perfect. I camped Friday night in a backcountry area overlooking Sugar Bay. The sunrise picture above was taken at Craven's Bay on Saturday morning before I headed north to Marion for the fluorescent mineral dig.

the world on corrugated

I know. I know. It's been a few days since my last post, but this has been an incredible week. I have been working on three design projects at the same time. Now I normally juggle projects. I have this 4 x 8 foot whiteboard in my office and each project I am involved in has a 1 x 3 inch magnetic tile on the board. There are usually 100+ projects on the board and there are only two of us to take care of getting these projects designed, printed and delivered. As a project progresses toward completion, the tile gets moved across the board. During a typical week 20-30 new jobs come in and 20-30 jobs are completed. In addition to all the little projects the three aforementioned huge projects have consumed a long time this week. One project was to create display panel graphics for a trade show in Beijing which happens next week. Another project was to create a series of 8 pocket folders and 8 matching PowerPoint templates. The biggest challenge with that one was finding a color pallet that worked for all 8 designs [one color as an anchor and a different complementary color for each of the folders]. The final project has been the most time-consuming and also the most fun. The challenge was to create a graphic which represents corrugated board, paper and global distribution. After finding a source of single-sided fluted board [the brown corrugated sheet used as the base for the image above] I decided to create a globe from waded up paper. I purchased an 8-inch ball to use as the foundation, googled types of maps, found a huge interrupted homolosine map to use as a guide, printed out blue sheets for the water and landmasses using the homolosine map image, covered the ball with adhesive and slowly adhered the crinkled paper to the ball. I presented the graphic for consideration this afternoon. Whew! What a week. I'm off tomorrow. I need the break!

the day the world didn't end

Large Hadron Collider. Photo and information for this post provided courtesy of NASA.

Here's what didn't happen on Sept. 10th:

The world did not end. Switching on the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland, did not trigger the creation of a microscopic black hole. And that black hole did not start rapidly sucking in surrounding matter faster and faster until it devoured the Earth, as sensationalist news reports had suggested it might.

Of course, because you're alive and reading this today, you already knew that. Currently the accelerator, an underground ring 5 miles across called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has been shut down for repairs. But once the immensely powerful machine starts back up, is there a chance that the doomsday scenario could still occur?

Relax. As Mark Twain might have said, reports of Earth's death have been greatly exaggerated.

"There never really was a danger from the accelerator, but that sure didn't stop people from speculating that there might be!" says Robert Johnson, a physicist at the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics and a member of the science team for NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, which launched in June to study gamma rays from many phenomena, including possible evaporating black holes.

There are several reasons why the world did not come to an end on Sept. 10th, and why the Large Hadron Collider isn't capable of triggering such a calamity.

First of all, yes, it is true that the LHC might create microscopic black holes. But, for the record, it could not have created one on its first day. That's because the physicists at CERN didn't steer beams of protons into each other to create high-energy collisions. Sept. 10th was just a warmup run. To date, the collider still has not produced any collisions, and it is the extreme energy of those collisions — up to 14 tera-electron volts — that could potentially create a microscopic black hole.

Actually, once the LHC is running again and begins producing collisions, physicists will be ecstatic if it creates a tiny black hole. It would be the first experimental evidence to support an elegant but unproven and controversial "theory of everything" called string theory.

In string theory, electrons, photons, quarks, and all the other fundamental particles are different vibrations of infinitesimal strings in 10 dimensions: 9 space dimensions and one time dimension. (The other 6 space dimensions are hidden by one explanation or another, for example by being "curled up" on an extremely small scale.) Some physicists tout string theory's mathematical elegance and its ability to integrate gravity with the other forces of nature. The widely accepted Standard Model of particle physics does not include gravity, which is one reason why it does not predict that the LHC would create a gravitationally collapsed point — a black hole — while string theory does.

Many physicists have started to doubt whether string theory is true. But assuming for a moment that it is, what would happen when a black hole is born inside the LHC? The surprising answer is "not much." Even if the black hole survives for more than a fraction of a second (which it probably wouldn't), most likely it would be flung out into space. "It would only have the mass of a hundred or so protons, and it would be moving at near the speed of light, so it would easily have escape velocity," Johnson explains. Because the tiny black hole would be less than a thousandth the size of a proton and would have an exceedingly weak gravitational pull, it could easily zip through solid rock without ever touching — or sucking in — any matter. From the perspective of something this tiny, the atoms that make up "solid" rock appear to be almost entirely empty space: the vast space between the atoms' nuclei and their orbiting electrons. So a micro black hole could shoot down through the center of the Earth and out the other side without causing any damage just as easily as it could shoot up through 300 feet of the Swiss countryside. Either way, it would end up out in the near-vacuum of space, where the odds of it touching and sucking in any matter so that it could grow into a menace would be smaller still.

So the first thing a micro-black hole would do is leave the planet safely behind. But there are other, even stronger reasons why scientists believe the LHC poses no threat to Earth. For one, a black hole created in the LHC would almost certainly evaporate before it got very far, most scientists believe. Stephen Hawking, the physicist who wrote A Brief History of Time, predicted that black holes radiate energy, a phenomenon known as Hawking radiation. Because of this steady loss of energy, black holes eventually evaporate. The smaller the black hole, the more intense the Hawking radiation, and the quicker the black hole will vanish. So a black hole a thousand times smaller than a proton should disappear almost instantly in a quick burst of radiation.

"Hawking's prediction is not based on speculative string theory but rather on well understood principles of quantum mechanics and particle physics," Johnson notes.

Despite its strong theoretical foundations, Hawking radiation has never been observed directly. Still, scientists are confident that any black hole created by the LHC would pose no threat. How can they be so sure? Because of cosmic rays. Thousands of times per day, high-energy cosmic rays strike the Earth's atmosphere, colliding with molecules in the air with at least 20 times more energy than the most powerful collisions that the LHC can produce. So if this new accelerator could make Earth-devouring black holes, cosmic rays would have already done so billions of times during Earth's long history.

And yet, here we are. Let the collisions begin!

fall a little at a time

Fall is sneaking up on us this year. I was hoping the fall colors would be showing more by now. I just hope I'm not too busy when they finally arrive to take a substantial amount of time to take pictures. I would love to be in the Smokies when fall is in full bloom, but that does not appear to be an option. Lichterman Nature Center in Memphis was a great place to take fall pictures in October 2006. Fort Pillow or Big Hill Pond or Natchez Trace might be good options this year.

what will heaven be like

Do you ever think about what it is going to be like in heaven. Just like everyone else, I don't know what heaven is going to look like or feel like. Yes, the Bible tells us about heaven but there is no way that I can fully comprehend the details. What will I truly look like? What is the mansion God has waiting for me? Who will I know? How will I communicate or travel? Where exactly is heaven? I know we were made for God's glory and we will worship Him eternally when we arrive in heaven. We will have an opportunity to walk streets of gold, recline on clouds, play musical instruments and sing praises to Him. But what will God look like? Can we see Him at all? Will we dance and celebrate when we are in His presence or will we be so humbled that we will drop to the ground in awe? I think it is going to be such an awesome experience. No tears. No worries. No 401[k]s or gasoline prices. No need for cars. Just endless celebration and worship and praise.

I think Jesus was a foretelling of some of the details of heaven. After the resurrection He came back to earth. So how did He get here and how did he get around? I think we will be able to travel at the speed of thought when we get to heaven. Think it and there you will be. Jesus appeared to many people after His return to earth. Did He have to appear to them in human form or could He have been a spirit. I believe He chose the form He wanted to appear and He chose to walk among them in human form with a body they could see and touch. When we get to heaven I believe we will have bodies of light [energy] and will have the ability to change as necessary.

1 Corinthians 13: 12 [New American Standard Bible--NASB]
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

I believe we will know everything we ever thought about knowing when we get to heaven, if it even matters at all. I've always thought one of the questions I what to ask God is "What about the dinosaurs?" How old are they really and how did they die? That's such a small question compared to the universe. Are there other worlds with humans on them, or are there other planets with other life forms completely different than humans? According to 1 Corinthians I will know the answers to these and any other questions I might have.

1 Corinthians 2: 9 [NASB]
but just as it is written, "Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him."

I don't think we can even imagine [with our limited little brains] what awaits us. God created the universe. When I look at the small part of the universe we can see through instruments such as the Hubble Telescope, I am amazed. So vast. So beautiful. So fascinating and interesting. God made all that and more. Where in the universe is heaven or is it in the physical universe that we see with our eyes at all? Is it in another dimension which we cannot reach or see or imagine in this earthbound life? Where is heaven? I wonder. After all . . . He gave Adam a planet!

John 14:1 [NASB] Jesus said
"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

John 14:2 [NASB]
"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

John 14:3 [NASB]
"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

I am totally interested in your thoughts on heaven. Let me know what you think.

Song 450: I Can Only Imagine
Artist: Mercy Me
Album: Almost There
Year: 2001
--------------------------------------------------
I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

I can only imagine

[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

I can only imagine

I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine

I can only imagine

[Chorus]

I can only imagine [x2]

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you

I can only imagine

books

Books help us understand who we are and how to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean: they show us how to live and die . . . We may notice amazing details during the course of a day but we rarely let ourselves stop and really pay attention. An author makes you notice, makes you pay attention . . .

Song 449: I've Been Searching So Long
Artist: Chicago
Album: Chicago VII
Year: 1974
--------------------------------------------------
As my life goes on I believe
Somehow something's changed
Something deep inside
Ooh a part of me

There's a strange new light in my eyes
Things I've never known
Changin' my life
Changin' me

I've been searchin'
So long
To find an answer
Now I know my life has meaning
Ow oh

Now I see myself as I am
Feeling very free
Life is everything
Ooh it's meant to be
When my tears have come to an end
I will understand
What I left behind
Part of me

I've been searching
So long
To find and answer
Now I know my life has meaning
Woah woah

Searching
Don't you know I'm yeah yeah
For an answer
To the question
Oh yeah
For our minds
Baby
Baby it's true
It's only natural
It's only natural baby, yeah
Good things
In life
Take a long time
yeah yeah

in them ole cotton fields back home

Cotton fields revisited.

Last week I stopped by the cotton fields just after dawn. Today I stopped by at mid-day. I enjoy coming here and observing the cotton. This cotton boll and all the others in this field are ripe for harvest. The rains of July helped mature these bolls and the hot weather of August and September brought them to full maturity, as they burst open to reveal the soft, white cotton inside.

I won't tell

Food is a big part of fair life. The biscuits in the top picture were cooked in the oven of a wood-burning stove, very similar to the one my mother used when I was boy. And like my mother's biscuits, the ones here were made from scratch. The bottom picture is chicken kabobs cooked on an open grill. That's what I had for lunch today. Mmmmmm!!

Around 11:00 this morning a sweet, white-haired little lady came into our booth. Just then I heard Phil, our next-door wooden spoon maker neighbor, call over to her . . . "I won't tell that you're not in church if you don't tell I'm not in church!" The little lady was totally surprised. She hide her face in her hands and when she recovered from being found out, she went over to Phil and gave him a big hug. You see, Phil is not only a spoon maker, he's a Lutheran minister. Her Lutheran minister.

In my time of dying, want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home

Meet me, jesus, meet me. meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, lord. please meet me with another pair

Well, well, well, so I can die easy (x2)

Jesus, gonna make up.. somebody, somebody...
Jesus gonna make up... jesus gonna make you my dyin bed

Oh, saint peter, at the gates of heaven... wont you let me in
I never did no harm. I never did no wrong

Oh, gabriel, let me blow your horn. let me blow your horn
Oh, I never did, did no harm.

Ive only been this young once. I never thought Id do anybody no wrong
No, not once.

Oh, I did somebody some good. somebody some good...
Oh, did somebody some good. I must have did somebody some good...

And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know its got to be real
Oh, lord, deliver me
All the wrong Ive done
You can deliver me, lord
I only wanted to have some fun.

Hear the angels marchin, hear the marchin, hear them marchin,
Hear them marchin, the marchin

Oh my jesus... (repeat)

Oh, dont you make it my dyin, dyin, dyin...

mind walking

On one of my few breaks during the craft show today I wandered across the grounds, visiting with craftsmen and artists, talking about their talents, admiring their creations, asking their permission to take a few shots of their treasures. The sunlight fell on these yard chimes just perfectly this afternoon. These are some of my favorite shots.

Tonight 11 of us gathered at the Memphis Pizza Café for an evening of fun, food and fellowship. We only see each other once a year for four days [although we have pledged to visit each other between craft shows this time]. The polymer clay artist and her son [the photographer], the chain mail maker, the natural dyer, her daughter, grandson, her sister, my wife and daughters ([t]ae kwon mom, [b]iomedical daughter and [f]ine art daughter) and I whiled away the hours finding out about each other. The photographer introduced me to a new concept . . . mind walking. It's just the same as brainstorming, except it's all about conversation rather than seeking new ideas as one does with brainstorming. I love brainstorming and as it turns out, I have been engaging in mind walking all these years and just didn't realize it. Our conversation covered a variety of topics . . . movies, music, technology, websites, blogs, photography, hiking, nature, weather, cars, family and hometowns [among other things]. Needless to say, it will be hard to get up in the morning and face the last day of the craft show, but it was well worth it. We had a fantastic time!

Song 446: I Shot The Sheriff
Artist: Eric Clapton
Album: 461 Ocean Boulevard
Year: 1974
--------------------------------------------------
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

All around in my home town
Theyre trying to track me down.
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy.
But I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.
I shot the sheriff, and they say it is a capital offense.

Sheriff john brown always hated me;
For what I dont know.
Every time that I plant a seed
He said, kill it before it grows.
He said, kill it before it grows.
I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.
I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town.
All of a sudden I see sheriff john brown
Aiming to shoot me down.
So I shot, I shot him down.
I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

Reflexes got the better of me
And what is to be must be.
Every day the bucket goes to the well,
But one day the bottom will drop out,
Yes, one day the bottom will drop out.
But I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh no.
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh no.

journey of the $100 bill

Yarn dyed with indigo [blue] and onion skins [gold]

Beads and lights in a vase

Homemade ice cream

The stone carver and sculptor, one of my best friends, told me this little story today at the fair. Many years ago while demonstrating stone carving at another show similar to this one, he made an astonishing discovery. A lady in that show sold small, inexpensive items at her booth. Nothing on her shelves sold for more than $5.00. One customer came into her booth and made a very large purchase and paid for the items with a $100 bill. The lady was so excited that she immediately came to D's booth and told him that she had been wanting one of his stone sculptures for a very long time and this was her opportunity to buy one. She paid for the sculpture with the $100 bill. D also saw this as an opportunity and immediately used the $100 bill to pay for an item he had been wanting for quite some time. As he spent his $100 bill, he wondered where the bill would go from there. He kept tabs on it for the remainder of the show and found that that single $100 bill was responsible for generating $1100 worth of business that day.

BTW: 1700 more students came to the fair today. All of them asking the same questions as the 1300 students yesterday. I am hoarse from talking so much.

Dear Lord, give me strength to carry on.
Dear Lord, give me strength to carry on.
My home may be out on the highway,

But please, give me strength to carry on.

Dear Lord, give me strength to carry on.
My home may be out on the highway,
Lord, I've done so much wrong
But please, give me strength to carry on.

fillin in

Chain mail.

Onion bowl.

Pastel artist.

Today was the first day of the 36th Annual Pink Palace Crafts Fair. 1300 students made their way through the fair, each one with a set of questions to ask the demonstrating craftsmen. Our questions were: [01] What is spinning? [02] What is carding? [03] What fibers are used in spinning? And the answers are: [01] The twisting of fibers to make yarn or thread. [02] Combing the fibers so they all lie in the same direction. [03] Plant fibers such as cotton and flax; and animal fibers such as sheep, goat, llama, rabbit, camel, etc.

One of our best friends at the fair is our next-door-neighbor, the wooden spoon maker. He's not wooden. The spoons he makes are wooden. After the school kids finished their rounds this afternoon he asked if I would watch his booth for a few minutes while he took a break. I agreed and within a minute of his departure his booth was crowded with ladies in search of wooden spoons. Of course I'm not a wooden spoon expert so I had to inform the potential purchasers of this, so I did.

Hello ladies. I'm not Phil. Phil has had his fill and fled so I'm filling in for Phil. Most ignored my statement, but one sweet lady chuckled and proceeded to buy a spoon.

it's show time

Move in day at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair. This is the 36th Annual Fair and the 26th year that [t]ae kwon mom and I have done this show. She is a demonstrating craftsman. I am the demonstrating craftsman's helper. We get wool just as it is sheared from sheep. Clean it. Tease it. Card it. And then [t]ae kwon mom spins it into skeins of yarn. Dyes it with natural dyes [or Kool Aid]. Makes stuff out of it. All the stuff you see in her booth here, she made. She's a very talented lady.

Tomorrow we man the booth and answer questions from thousands of elementary students. Thursday and Friday are student days at the Fair. Private school kids. County school kids. City school kids. Kids from neighboring counties. They all converge on the fair and learn about skills from an earlier time in our history. Broom making. Iron forging. Sculpting. Lapidary. Spoon making. Chair caning. Quilting. Knitting. Spinning. Natural Dying. Tating. Knitting. Wood turning. Honey making. Preparing meals on a wood-burning stove. Glass blowing. Pottery. Furniture making. Candy making. Donut making. Ice cream churning. And dozens of other skills.
