weather forces shuttle home early

Hurricane Dean developed into a Category 4 monster storm yesterday, packing sustained winds of 145mph and maintaining a NNW track at about 18mph. Dean swept past the Dominican Republic and Haiti yesterday, headed for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. NASA is concerned that it may track toward Houston, home of NASA Mission Control. Their concern has prompted them to end the STS-118 Space Shuttle Endeavour mission early and bring the astronauts home on Tuesday, rather than Wednesday. Astronauts hurriedly completed their last spacewalk yesterday, said their goodbyes and closed the hatches between the ISS (International Space Station) and the shuttle to prepare for Tuesday's landing.

NASA is prepared to rush a skeleton crew of mission control personnel to Cape Canaveral, Florida, but only if the shuttle is unable to land on Tuesday. Keep in mind, that they still have the gash in the underbelly of the shuttle, which has not been repaired. If I were a member of the STS-118 crew (especially the teacher-turned-astronaut) I would be stressing a little bit right now. I know I will be anxiously watching on Tuesday.
